The Vulgarity of Good Taste

I was listening to Kansas Public Radio on the way home from the grocery store. The classical radio host was introducing part of the musical score from The Day the Earth Stood Still by Bernard Hermann. Herman hated "the vulgarity of good taste," a phrase he coined to describe the creation and persistence of convention in the face of invention.
